Winter storms can bring a variety of challenges, from power outages to property damage. As a tenant, it’s important to be prepared and understand what to expect. Here are some tips to help you get ready for the winter storm season:
Understanding Power Outages
Responsibility for Power Outages: As your property management team, we strive to ensure your comfort and safety. However, we cannot be held responsible for power outages or any resulting loss, such as spoiled food from refrigerators being out of power.
Utility Company Control: Please be aware that we do not have control over the electric utility company. Power outages can occur due to various reasons, including severe weather, and are managed by the utility provider.
Plan Ahead for Power Outages
Stock Up on Essentials: Make sure you have enough non-perishable food, water, and medications to last several days. Keep flashlights, batteries, and a battery-powered radio on hand.
Charge Devices: Keep your mobile phones and other essential devices fully charged. Consider investing in a portable charger or power bank.
Stay Warm: Have extra blankets and warm clothing available. If you have a working fireplace, ensure you have a supply of firewood.
Preparation Tips: To minimize the impact of power outages, we recommend keeping a supply of non-perishable food and water, and having a cooler with ice packs on hand to store perishable items temporarily.
Insurance and Utility Provider: You might also check with your renters insurance to see if it covers losses due to power outages. Additionally, you can contact the utility provider directly for updates and assistance during outages. Visit PG&E’s Outage Preparedness and Support.
By understanding these limitations and preparing accordingly, you can better manage the challenges that come with winter storms and power outages.
Roof Repairs During Storms
Understand Limitations: Roofers cannot work during an active storm due to safety concerns. However, we will make every effort to get them out to tarp or repair any damage as soon as it is safe to do so.
Report Damage Promptly: If you notice any roof damage, report it immediately so we can prioritize repairs once the storm passes.
Manage Leaks: If you experience a leak during a storm, move personal items away from the leak and place a bucket or bin to catch the water in the meantime. This can help minimize damage to your belongings.
Expect Delays: Roof repairs can take longer to address due to high demand and vendor capacity during storm season. We will attempt to get the roof tarped (if possible). We appreciate your patience as we work to resolve these issues as quickly as possible.
Fences Repairs and Tree Damage
Expect Delays: Fences and tree damage can take longer to address due to high demand and vendor capacity during storm season.
Preventative Measures: If you have trees on the property, monitor their status after any high wind event (broken branches, etc.). Secure any loose items in your yard to prevent them from becoming hazards in windy conditions.
General Preparedness
Stay Informed: Keep an eye on weather forecasts and alerts. Sign up for local emergency notifications to stay informed about storm conditions and safety recommendations.
Create an Emergency Kit: In addition to food and water, your emergency kit should include first aid supplies, important documents, and any necessary personal items.
Know Your Evacuation Routes: Familiarize yourself with local evacuation routes and have a plan in place in case you need to leave your home quickly.
Update Renters Insurance: Ensure your renters insurance is up-to-date and covers potential storm-related damages. This can provide peace of mind and financial protection in case of significant damage.
Watch for Water Intrusion: Be vigilant for signs of water intrusion during potential flooding. Report any issues immediately to help prevent further damage.
By taking these steps, you can help ensure your safety and minimize the impact of winter storms on your home. Remember, preparation is key to weathering the storm!
